Business leaders often are subject to Job Related stress when they feel their best efforts are not enough to effect the outcomes they desire. That feeling of being out of control is a definite symptom of potentially dangerous stress. How we handle this stress makes all the difference.
For most of us, the main source of stress in our lives is related to our jobs. In a an American Management Association survey1 of middle and top managers, 2685 reported on the job stress.
The following are commonly discussed as being significant causes of job stress:
- Heavy workloads with the time pressure of unrealistic deadlines
- Conflicting personal goals and business goals
- Uncertainty about the future of the organization and therefore one's family situation
Many executives are high achievers who have risen to the top of companies because of their performance - they often generate their own stress. At the optimum stress level one shows enthusiasm, high morale, mental clarity and good judgment, innovative ideas, and constructive output. When these high performing executives place excessive demands on themselves or when excessive pressure is put on them by a superior, subordinates, or the economic environment, their productivity can acheive peak levels for short periods . However nothing lasts forever, and so it is with personal performance it begins to decline when one's stress tolerance has been taxed to the fullest. If the stress continues, the executive tends to become irritable and has strained interpersonal relationships. Then the executive becomes inefficient, loses objectivity, has a greater tendency to make errors, suffers memory lapses, and feels physically and mentally fatigued.2
